Our mission

The Hummus Academy is a non-profit initiative dedicated to celebrating hummus as a cultural heritage and a concept that connects people. Our philosophical, historical, and culinary approaches aim to build a more conscious, ethical, and delicious future that serves the planet and all living beings.

How do we do it

We use food for storytelling and community building, exploring diverse food cultures through events, workshops, and publications. While hummus is our starting point, our vision extends far beyond it.

    Umayya Abu Hanna

    Chair of the Academy and Head of Research

    Umayya is a writer, cultural broker and journalist. Umayya’s new book researches histories of Palestine, including its cuisine, starting 1,5 million years ago

  • Mary Ann Jaraisy

    Treasurer of the Academy and Head of Design

    ​MaryAnn is a multidiciplinary artist, working at the intersection of design and ceramics. Cultural and event producer, co- founder of the iconic Sudfeh restaurant and cultural center in Nazareth.

    Mohammad Badran

    Secretary of the Academy and Head of Anthropology

    Mohammad is an anthropologist, social designer at Open Embassy, community mobilizer at MB Capacity Development and Founder and Director at Syrian Volunteers in the Netherlands

    Abdelkader Nassiri

    Advisory Board and Head of public affairs

    Abdelkader is a Moroccan- Dutch creative social justice activist and PR and communications manager. He has worked in media, the cultural sector, and currently at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences. He is a program maker, ​networker, and event organizer

    Advisory Board and Head of Science

    Darine is a Palestinian biologist and consultant in science, policy and international collaboration, bridging the gap between Global North and Global South. She loves experimenting in the kitchen, yoga, reading and dancing to good music.

    Sobhi is a consultant and educator on storytelling & communications, diversity & inclusion, strategy and innovation. Currently, he works with Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences and Oxford HR

    Dana Durr

    Head of Film and Music

    Dana is an animator, filmmaker, designer, singer-songwriter and musician. Dana studied and worked in four countries, graduated as an animator in London and The Netherlands and has internationally acclaimed films

Doelstelling

Stichting The Hummus Academy heeft als doel het bevorderen van de dekolonisatie van inheemse keukens.
De stichting zet eten in als middel voor educatie, culturele bewustwording en maatschappelijke verbinding.

De stichting tracht haar doel te verwezenlijken door:

  • het creëren van ruimtes voor authentieke, ethische en toekomstgerichte verhalen;

  • het organiseren van workshops, events, storytelling en culturele projecten;

  • het delen van kennis over inheems eten.

  • De stichting heeft geen winstoogmerk en dient het algemeen nut.

Activiteiten

  • Educatieve workshops en masterclasses

  • Publieke events en culturele bijeenkomsten

  • Storytelling en kennisdeling over voedselcultuur

  • Samenwerkingen met culturele en maatschappelijke organisaties

Deze activiteiten zijn gericht op een breed publiek en dragen bij aan cultureel begrip en inclusie.

Bestuur

Het bestuur bestaat uit minimaal drie bestuursleden:

  • Voorzitter: Sobhi Khatib

  • Secretaris: Mohammed Badran 

  • Penningmeester: Mary Aan Jaraisy

Bestuurders ontvangen geen beloning voor hun werkzaamheden. Zij kunnen uitsluitend redelijk gemaakte onkosten declareren.

Financiering

De stichting verwerft haar middelen uit:

  • donaties en giften;

  • subsidies;

  • bijdragen van deelnemers;

  • opbrengsten uit activiteiten;

  • schenkingen en erfstellingen.

Bestedingsbeleid

Alle middelen worden besteed aan activiteiten die bijdragen aan de doelstelling van de stichting.
Eventuele reserves worden beperkt gehouden en uitsluitend gebruikt voor continuïteit en toekomstige activiteiten.

Bij ontbinding van de stichting wordt een eventueel batig saldo besteed aan een ANBI-instelling met een soortgelijke doelstelling

Beloningsbeleid

Bestuursleden ontvangen geen vergoeding.
Vrijwilligers en betrokkenen kunnen onkosten declareren conform de regels van de Belastingdienst.
