“Een Palestijns Diner” book, is an ode of love to Palestine and especially Palestinians in Gaza. The book is the exact opposite of genocide: it is a package of love, belonging, beauty, future, hope and a menu rooted in history.
“Een Palestijns Diner” immerses us in culinary history, stories, 13 recipes, stunning photographs and a map. We read about Palestinian Xmas dinners and traditions of Christian Palestinian heritage with over 2000-year roots in the land. We get a glimpse of personal family stories of dining, cooking and family stories from towns such as Cana.
The book introduces the current cultural renaissance that Palestinians are producing on all fronts. Palestine has been the last arriving point of the Spice and Silk Road for 2500 years and the gate of Europe to Asia. It has been a Mediterranean international hub for centuries, absorbing and producing new layers of diversity and cultures. We hear how Gaza and Jaffa, both over 5000 year old urban Mediterranean cities, have shaped the Palestinian cuisine with their rich sea-food and explore the season of oysters and seasons of foraging. We read how Gaza gave the world the first internationally branded wine, Vinum Gazentum, and how Gaza gave us the Hummus recipe we know and love today.
And by the way, did you know that Hummus is older than the city of Amsterdam?
The book tells the history of the Palestinian cuisine and its elements going back 13000 years when Palestine was at the core of the Agricultural Revolution. The Agri-cultural Revolution changed the whole world. It has shaped the rhythm of our day, and shaped our cultures. The menu has elements which date from that period!
Een Palestijn Diner’ brings joy, creativity and love from Palestine to your lap this winter.
May you love and be loved
“Een Palestijns Diner” is in Dutch and we hope for English and other versions to soon be published
